BYOT

Bring Your Own Technology

At Whanganui High School we want every student to have the best possible learning opportunities. We aim to develop the competencies students need for study, work, and lifelong learning.

Since 2016, Whanganui High School has implemented a Bring Your Own Technology (BYOT) approach. This ongoing initiative supports students to become confident, self-directed, and collaborative learners through the effective use of digital technologies. It also promotes ethical and responsible use, enabling students to be problem-solvers and positive contributors in a rapidly evolving world.

The pace of change in the digital landscape continues to accelerate, creating both exciting opportunities and new challenges for students and teachers. Technology is increasingly integrated into everyday life, with fast and reliable access to information through wireless internet. This enables learning to extend beyond the classroom and supports more personalised, engaging, and future-focused learning experiences.

BYOT allows learning to occur in ways that were not previously possible, while recognising that technology complements, rather than replaces, other methods of learning. There remains an important place for approaches such as handwriting and non-digital tasks.

What is the ‘T’ in BYOT?

For the purposes of BYOT, the ‘T’ refers to a privately owned, personal, portable computing device that is capable of connecting to the school’s wireless network. This includes laptops, notebooks, and Chromebooks (across platforms such as Android, Apple, and Microsoft).

Please note that mobile phones are not permitted as BYOT devices and are not to be used for learning purposes at school.

To support families in making decisions about appropriate devices, the school provides recommended minimum specifications.
